I used the suggestions of both bandmjim and faraway. It made all the difference! Many thanks to both of you. I may go through all my locos and check and tweak all of them.

Thanks again.  -Al

You will find a lot of recommendations how to tweak the CVs to get a smooth startup.

I got a nice result by using a manual speed curve (CV 67 - 97) starting very slow with values of 1, 2, 3,.... The last values (CV90 and up) use increments of 10.

See/read what is in CV 2, start voltage, then either keep lowering it until you get it to just start on speed step one, or set it to one and keep increasing until it just starts on speed step one on the handheld.  You may have to play with the kick start to get it to run smooth.

Athearn Genesis GP7 starting speed
Posted by astapleford on Friday, April 22, 2016 12:12 PM

I recently purchased an Athearn and Genesis GP7. It runs great with the Soundtraxx sound decoder. However, it seems to start rather abrubtly.....with the speed one would expect at about speed step 10 (I use a Digitrax system). I checked all CV settings for start, voltage kick start, etc, and everything is set for defaults.

Any suggestions for how I can get it start at a crawl as would be expected for this locomotive?
