They look like a miniature Tortoise, they attach with four small screws underneath, they have a toggle switch inside for throwbar snap and power routing (DPDT). They have an attachment on either side for a throwrod.I love 'em. I used them on my last layout after seeing them on Keith Jordan's. I love, love, love, love 'em, and I recommend them heartily and without hesitation. After about six or so, I could install one in about ten minutes.
And if you get ambitious you can visit a radio control shop to get flexible pushrods and have the pull rod not in a straight line with the point throw.I love them.

They are completely mechanical. They provide a linkage to throw the points from a remote actuator, typically a cable-and-knob assembly on the fascia. It looks like they've got contacts to power a frog and operate a position indicator signal.
