Some turnouts are not "DCC friendly". DCC-equipped engines are touchier when it comes to shorts. A momentary short with a DC engine may not be noticeable, but with DCC even a fraction of a second is enough to make the DCC system shut down as you described. Unfortunately, you'll need to either re-work your turnouts to eliminate the shorts, or buy new "DCC friendly" versions and replace them.
BTW re the engine - it could be the short did a "reset" back to the factory specs, so it might now be under ID 03 or 0003. Try putting the engine on a programming track and try to read the ID. If it reads it, then the decoder is OK.

I hope you still read this, but the loco is probably fried. I have similar problem on my digitraxx system, and it indicates a short circuit on the turnouts. I am yet to find a decent fix. I hope you can replace the chip on your locomotive!

I have a new NCC PowerCab. I ran my new loco with a MRC decoder. It ran great until it hit the turnouts. The PowerCab shut down each time do to a short in the turnouts. After the PowerCab reset...it ran fine again. Today the loco will not work at all and the PowerCab can not read the CV on the loco. Any ideas?
