New to this. I'd like to add DCC and sound to a new Bachmann SD40 "DCC ready" engine.
any recommendations?
I'm not familiar with that loco so can offer only general comments until someone can add specifics. I presume it's a SD40-2? I see they currently list some that are DC / DCC w/o sound, so a key issue is usually where there might be room for a speaker. For a first DCC project, one would like a relatively easy conversion.
- I'll suggest calling Tony's Trains and Litchfield Station. They would likely know the model and the best options, simpler plus other options (that can get complex).
- I don't see a sample install w/photos on the TCS site, not helpful. I note that there's a Tsunami for the SD40-2 on the Soundtraxx site. I prefer LokSound Select 6Aux, smaller than the original circuit boards, but I hard wire mine.
- Including sound, if there's not room for a speaker provided, may require modifying the weight. Ideally (but unlikely) you would have a buddy with a milling machine.
- If you're getting in there and the lighting is bulbs, consider whether you're up for replacing with LEDs, which last much longer. With the LokSound, they can be adjusted (e.g., brightness) as well.

Since you are new to this, it is not plug and play. I have used the same type of lightboard decoder but for a different version diesel.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
The problem becomes where to place the speaker. There might be room under the motor in the fuel tank or under the fans. But a stock board will get in the way of the fans. So you'll have to remove it and hardwire it up.
Best way to find out is to buy the unit and measure the spaces.

I have milled a few.
Remove ALL parts from the frame. I use a bench mounted four inch wide belt sander or a bench mounted four inch diameter rotary sander. Usually 80 grit paper. Keep a bowl of cold water nearby to cool off the frame at times.
I keep a digital caliper nearby for measuring.
