Can Master Volume Be Adjusted When Locos Are In Consist?
Posted by peahrens on Monday, October 12, 2015 4:51 PM

I tried a search unsuccessfully so will ask here.  I have various locos where I have adjusted the sounds and speed matched to mates, then consisted those mates.  I make up advanced consists with my NCE PowerHouse Pro ProCab throttle, very easy to do.

My primary question is whether I can adjust the master volume(s) using Program On Main when in advance consist mode, and which locos are affected. For example, a consist with locos 1111 and 2222 might exist.  I select it by calling up the lead loco (1111 or 2222).  If I then select program on the main and the master volume CV for the lead loco, will that one (only) or both be adjusted, even if same type decoders?  ANd would the setting hold if the consist were broken.

I suspect this can't be done as paired locos with different type decoders would usually have different CV numbers for things such as master volume.

A more general question, can any CVs be adjusted using POM when in advance consist?  I know the momentum works for all locos when the momentum button is used on the ProCab, but is that a special case?

Thanks in advance for any insight offerred.

Volume of mismatched decoders - no way. What may be the volume CV on one brand might be the chuff rate on another, and you'd have a big mess. You should be able to program any CV even in consist, except the consist number. Momentum works because it is an NMRA standard CV, so all decoders use the same CV. Though if two brands use a different formula it could get interesting.

What about with identical decoders?

My primary question is whether I can adjust the master volume(s) using Program On Main when in advance consist mode, and which locos are affected.

With NCE, when you program on the main you can adjust the master volume of each unit in a consist individually by calling up the specific unit in the consist you want.  The other unit(s) in the consist will not be affected.  Remember that the command station actually assigns an alias consist unit address between 1 and 127 to your consist and puts that address in CV19.  So even though you may select lead loco 1111 to pull the train,  the command station is translating this to the consist address in CV19.

And yes, the new value you put in the CV that controls the master volume will hold when the consist is broken up.

It doesn't matter if different decoders have different CV assignments for master volume since they will be adjusted separately, as long as you can remember which decoder you have in a loco and which CV in that decoder does what.

IfOff all decoders in the consist use the same CV for volume control, I think you can control volume of all locos in the consist by addressing the consist number, not the lead or rear loco addresses.

Roger, no offense intended in asking this, but do you "think" or do you "know" that you can control volume of all locos in the consist by addressing the consist number if all decoders in the consist use the same CV for volume control?

I don't think this is correct, at least with NCE.  Each decoder is loco specific once programmed for the loco.  The loco number is permanent unless changed by the owner.  On the other hand, the alias address put in CV 19 by NCE can be temporary depending on how the owner assembles/breaks up his consists.

I don't know what happens with a Digitrax system because I don't know how consists are assembled with that system.

This is going to.get a little complicated but...

Yes you can.adjust the volume of each loco indivodually when in a consist. Just select the loco you wish to change then.go into program on.the main mode. Aafter that use.that decoders specific cv for.adjustment.

Be careful.adjusting cvs for momentum. Some.decoders will use unique.cvs.to represent acceleration and braking in a consist. This is used.to.simulate extremely lomg.locos which take.forever.to speed.up and stop. And.to be honest the.longer your train.the slower.you.should accel.to avoid a.derailment.

Trying to apply universal cv changes to all locos in the consist at once really.isnt supported consistently.

Rich,

I THOUGHT it could but now that I am back home I tested it. I now KNOW it doesn't work that way. I will endeavor to not make such a mistake again.

Roger, thanks for checking.  That does clarify things and your follow up is appreciated.  Good job.  Yes
