MTH / TMCC

I'm reading Modern Toy Train Repair n Maintenance. It talks about fixing Loco's MTH AND LIONEL, can you run MTH which is DCS, and Lionel TMCC on the same track, and if so which system is the best. I recall if you want to run MTH ON DCC " just change the decoder"
