You will have to turn the power pack up a little higher than with a DC only loco. Nature of the beast.

Whenever I purchase a new DCC ready locomotive, before installing the decoder, I run the loco on a dedicated DC track under DC power.

Most modern decoders are all dual-mode and will run on DC or DCC. That feature can be turned off in the decoder though, in which case it will just sit there on DC track. It won't hurt it.
