Posted by C&O Fan on Saturday, February 7, 2015 7:13 AM

No i don't work for them

If you haven't seen it yet~!

An impressive list of options
They pack a lot of stuff on one decoder
Your choice of EMD Prime movers
30 horns
30 bells
Setting the bar very high for all the other decoder Mfgs

I like the dual momentum mode Switching Vrs Main Line
The Dynamic Brakes are cool
As is the Auto Notching in Proto Mode

Couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing.

Amost 45 minutes of two guys with their hands in their pockets, so to speak.

They need to cut that back to 5 minutes and re-do the video more professionally.

It is long~~~ but they had a lot to cover

This wasn't a sales Demo

It was a clinic at a show

Had they demoed  all 30 whistles and 30 bells and the different prime movers

it would have been an hour long

I thought it was funny that the Sound Guy kept running the train Backwards

I totally agree!  The sound was pretty funky to start with.  My thoughts are: If I want to generate interest in a sound systemm I would use a quality system to record that system!

Obviously I don't have the attention span to watch many of the longer videos posted to the Forums here, I get to thinking I should get off my dead butt and get something done!

TCS is one of the front runners in sound, I'm sure they willd o a better job at some point.

This was a clinic that was recorded by one of the attendees

I'm sure the sound was different if you were there in person

I was more interested in hearing about the features ie the controllable Dynamic Brakes

and the Auto notching during Prototypical mode

I wish they would have demonstrated the Dual Momentun Mode for Switching / Mainline

Rather than talking about sound quality and bit rates

The same loco will sound different on your layout as compared to mine

because of all the audio

variables

Yes, that was pretty obvious.  I have spent some time at TCS's website and I have not seen a video demonstration of the WOW Diesel, yet.  I was hoping to see and hear the new decoder in a 5-10 minute demo.  Maybe this will happen in the near future.

Yea im sure it will be better sound quality and they will be able to reduce it down in size, esp if no one runs trains backwards 3 times

This one was shot live complete with background voices including the guy that walked in to the wrong room during the middle of the presentation ~~~no retakes or do overs on this one

Yeah, kinda reminds you of HDTV commercials shown on Standard Definition broadcasts.

I have the right to remain silent.  By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.

interesting that they're planning to bring out a 21 pin version. I guess that's becoming the standard now?

Starting to. Plus they are making some 21 pin adapter board to replace the OEM circuit boards, right now for Bachmann steam tenders but I'll bet they are doing the same for common diesels now that the diesel Wow is out. 21 pin is nice because EVERYTHING is in the plug - like another recent post on ditch lights in an AThearn Genesis. You need all 6 functions for headlights and ditch lights on both ends to make them work properly. A 9 pin connector only has 4 functions, the other two have to be soldered to the decoder board. Not very user friendly and with so many people saying they can't solder, trying to put a wire on a tiny pad on the decoder must be impossible for them.

I was hoping to see and hear the new decoder in a 5-10 minute demo.  Maybe this will happen in the near future.

I bought four of the WOWDiesel decoders from Tony's and they arrived yesterday.

There is a 9+ minute video from Tony's that may explain some background.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_OHU070dOM

I installed one in a Genesis F-3 and I was pretty pleased with the installation procedure. I have not finished the headlight hookup or replaced the body shell.

Here's a few photos:

I removed the rear truck in order to use the belt sander to remove about 1/8" material for the speaker enclosure. I also removed the white plastic clip that straddles the motor. While the truck was out I took the opportunity to direct solder the leads from the brass pickups and eliminate the plastic clips. One wire was already broken on a sharp edge of the brass. This engine was new from Athearn and never run!

Here's the Railmaster enclosure installed with some dabs of 3M stickytack. You can see the decoder and caps fit nicely in the cavity above the motor.

This is the speaker and enclosure I chose. I have had good results with Railworks but I have other brands that I haven't tried yet.

Here's how the whole install looks before I do the lighting. Kapton tape keeps everything in place. I found out later that I had a wire coming from the truck that would catch on the universal which has a slot on the OD that can grab a wire if it is too close! My bad... fixed it.

I ran the engine for a few minutes on address 03 and made a few feeble attempts at changing volume levels, horn types and bell types. The audio assist can be a pain sometimes but I guess I can get used to it. I need the documentation in front of me when I'm trying the menus, not watching a youtube tutorial.

There IS a dual prime mover option for us E unit modelers Thumbs Up The "prime mover" does sound great but I'm going to have to take some time to truly evaluate it. I have stereo recordings that I made in the '70s around Cleveland when Penn Central was still using lots of Fs here so I can compare them to that.

TCS brags about bell selection but you can toss out about 25 of the 30 offered, IMHO. I noticed one other thing that kind of bugs me, the "notching" sound includes "Clicking" that, I guess is supposed to be the throttle lever or layshaft moving. Unless you are in the cab or ten feet away from the engine, you would never hear this.

Another thing... Windshield wipers??? They sound fine but I can't remember the last time I heard them from a train passing by at 50 mph!

Motor control IS excellent but I don't have the couplers on yet so I'm just running the light engine.

IF time permits I'll try to get a video posted so you can hear for yourselves.

I'm kind of on the fence here. Loksound, right now, is my favorite. Tsunami just doesn't cut it with the anemic horn sound. QSI and Paragon2 a far distant 4th and 5th. For TCS to gain my acceptance they are going to have to prove themselves.

So far, so good... stay tuned! Ed
