JMRI and similar PC programs
Posted by Indy Rail on Sunday, February 1, 2015 9:26 PM

Hey y'all. What I'm wanting to do is hook up my computer to the layout and program it so that trains run themselves, even honking horns at grade crossings and following signal orders. What programs are capable of doing this? I also want the program to be an "automatic dispatcher". Thanks. -Outlaw

JMRI can do it, but you'll probably have to code some logic and/or scripts yourself.

RR&Co can do it too, and is easier to set up, but it costs way more than JMRI.

I believe there are others, too.  Try a Google search on "model railroad automation software" (without the quotes) and you'll get a lot of hits...

EDIT:  Forgot to add that you'll have to use a LOT of detection, etc on the layout itself to accomplish that.  Otherwise, the software can't "see" where the trains are or what they're doing...
