lost my sound in a tsunami decoder ?
Posted by BIG JERR on Sunday, November 9, 2014 1:22 AM

Sadhello again ,still cleaning and firing up the rail road ,I found that one of my pride and joy bowser FT sound chassies is NOT playing sound ,the unit is part of a full time abba set and has a twin brother so it took a bit for me to realize that only one of the sound chassies was putting out sound ...Sad

took the chassie to the office where I have a test /program area @ desk with pr-3 /decoderpro   and a zephyr  test track , every think was still as programedand speed curve  but NO sound , so did the FULL reset to factory and still no sound motor part is fine but sound just disapeared ...

any Ideas cant think of what could be wrong? its got very low mileage and has only been setting ,just woke it up from its summer sleep in a nice dry insulated room . I have never had a problem with ANY of my sound decoders , had a couple motor only digitraxx decoders freeze-up a couple years a go, and I have quite a few sound decoders setting on tracks maybe 6-7 each of sountrax tsunami and qsi with never a problem , whats up ? any ideas ?

please advise ... I checked and rechecked volumes and eq ,mute and everything ealse ,did a factory reset with decoder pro in direct byte and it appears to of taken as all motor cvs have been reset ....Jerr

Hi, Jerr

In two of the cases where I had refusal of the sound to come out after attempting the usual F8 or total resets they both turned out to be bad speakers.

I'm not saying this is your problem but it has happened to me. I got a super bargain on a BLI engine that the sound was dead on, I was going to put in a new WOWsound decoder anyway but I tried temporarily twisting the speaker wires onto a new speaker that I had on hand... b i n g o! Good as new!

In another case I had a P2K E-8 that was dead silent no matter what I tried. Checked all the wiring and it all looked good. Humm, must have a bad chip or amp on the decoder board. I installed a new sound decoder... and—still no sound! Another hour of fussing with wiring then I got an AA battery and touched it to the speaker leads. No sound, there should have been static noise from the 1.5 v battery.

I went back and checked the original decoder and it turned out to be fine!

Maybe try another capacitor as well, slim chance there BUT you want to eliminate EVERY possibility!

Good Luck, Ed

Jerr:

Don't forget to start with the basics, like a disconnected speaker wire.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

LOL, that's true I remember when I forgot to hit the unmute function button.  I forget which one it is.  But, go ahead and make sure it's not set on mute.

yep ! it was the speaker/speaker wiring, was to tired to solder last night but this morn I unsoldered and soldered in new speaker and she speaks , I shortened the old speaker wires and touched to solder pads on board and now the old one works ,so guess it was wiring or cold solder joint ....thanks to ALL Jerry
