It's even easier to add keep alives to Loksound Big Smile  The pins are right there to connect to.

True, but LokSound does not yet have Genset sound files available, and there's no indication on the ESU-USA web site of when they may be available.

Well yes, but he did say he was converting other locos as well.

I spoke with Matt from ESU about the Genset decoder, and I'll just say, the decoder will be available sooner than later.

PW,

Glad to help. I have an older Atlas U-33B and I picked up a Tsunami to replace the QSI. Thats tomorrow's project. It will be interesting to see if the resisters are in the lines and where they are located. The QSI's are good decoders but I like to add Keep Alives and it is a lot easier with the Tsunami's so I am slowly changing out my older decoders.

Thanks Marty!  I took your advice and placed the resistors mid-point in the wires to the LEDs.  That way, I was able to tuck them in the slots already in the weights, used for the wiring.  They didn't fit all the way in, but rested there nicely, held in place with Kapton tape.  Seems to have worked like a charm!

It's been a while since I installed a Tsunami into my Atlas Genset locomotive, but I don't recall having to add resistors.

There are some special instructions on the SoundTraxx or Atlas web site on installing the special decoder that was made specifically for the Genset, so check there.  Those instructions included detailed photographs.

PW,

I have removed QSI decoders and installed a number of Tsunamis in Atlas engines, mostly GE Dash 8's and they all had LED's factory installed. The resisters are shrink wrapped on the lighting connection wires and located fairly close to the led. I have not experienced and heating problems from the resisters. If you need to add resisters I would use 1K resisters close to the led and not place them on top of the decoder just in case. The shrink wrap is more to keep the bare wire away from areas it can cause shorts/ damage but you probably already knew that. I know the Genset is tight inside but there should be enough room for the resisters.

Good Luck,

Atlas Genset II and SoundTraxx Decoder
Posted by pwtotten on Saturday, November 8, 2014 10:03 PM

I'm installing a Soundtraxx AT1000 sound decoder in my new Altas Genset II engine.  I've run in a "problem".  I need to install resistors for the LED lights.  I've heard of people having problems with resistors getting hot and melting the shell of the engine.  So I'm trying to figure out where the resistors should be mounted.  Do I just solder them directly on top of the the decoder?  Anyone have any problems with this?  The pictures in the SoundTraxx application notes are poor, and I can't tell where the resistors are!

Thanks, in advance!
