I've run into that before.  I've made a CV change and get that little motor bump that is supposed to be indicative of the change being accepted.  And then nothing happens.  And after I read the instructions I find that the CV is not listed.

That 'little motor bump' only indicates that the DCC system has sent a programming command to the decoder, and has nothing at all to do with whether or not the decoder actually supports the CV you're attempting to program.

If you try to 'read' a non-supported CV value, you should get a reading of zero, which, again, indicates nothing other than the fact that your DCC system attempted to read the value but came up empty handed.

It would be nice if a DCC system came back with an error message telling us that a particular CV could not be progammed or is not supported by a decoder, but they have not been developed with that capability.

That may explain that it is non-functional though I find it curious that one can change (and read) the CV but it does not do anything when changed.

If I remember correctly, I believe that I called Soundtraxx about this and was told that different decoders were programmed to do different things according to the OEM's request.  I think that the programming of the decoder is the only differentiation between a sound value decoder and a "regular".  I think the decoders themselves are otherwise identical, and I suspect that Soundtraxx could reprogram the decoder if they wanted to.

Hi Paul,

I treid it with my Bachmann 2-6-0 and get the same results as you do. I was using an NCE Powercab and read CV113 first (it was 0)and again after I set it to non-zero (it was what I set it to) but if doesn't shut down the sound automatically or bootup quiet. Pressing f8 does silence it.

looking forward to anyone else's results or solutions.

The Bachmann reference page for the Sound value 2-6-0 is a list of CVs and 113 is not on that list.  That may explain that it is non-functional though I find it curious that one can change (and read) the CV but it does not do anything when changed.

But I'm foremost concerned that I can't resolve this for the full featured (I presume) Genesis FEF-3.  The Tsunami Users Guide and Tech Reference both address CV113 but I can't get it to work for the muting after stopping feature.  And I'm curious why the silence until Speed Step 1 option is available for the diesel (GP9) but not shown for the steamer in Decoder Pro.  I haven't observed what CVs that changes for the GP9 to see if I can manually adjust this on the FEF-3.  Perhaps the steam decoder came first and the diesel added that feature?

Maybe I should call the Soundtraxx folks (after an upcoming vacation).

Go to the Bachmann or SoundTraxx web site and you can download the technical reference manual for the Sound Value decoder from those sites, which will list every CV used by them, and indicate the default value and allowed range of values for each.

Decoder Pro has possibly not been updated to include the Sound Value decoders, since it is a purely voluntary effort.

I'm trying to learn Decoder Pro use with my fleet.  My Bachmann 2-6-0 w/reduced function Tsunami sound shows Quiet Mode Timeout Value on Decoder Pro's "Sound" tab.  If I put in a non-zero value it changes CV113 in list but has no effect.  What I'd like to accomplish is for it to be quiet when track powered up and to go quiet after stopping after x seconds, like I can set my full function Athearn Gensis Tsunami GP9.  Am I out of luck and Decoder Pro is showing something that can't be adjusted?

I just checked whether the CV113 actually changes by reading it in program track mode.  It does take the change but apparently has no effect (e.g., changing CV113 from 0 to 10).

Update: I just made a roster entry for my new Genesis FEF-3 with Tsunami sound and am having the same problem.  I can't get it to go quiet after x seconds using CV113.  Like the Bachmann 2-6-0 and unlike the GP9, the FEF3 Decoder Pro tabs offer the CV113 / Quiet Mode Timeout Setting (which I can't get to work) and neither steamer offers the wait until speed step 1 option that the GP9 diesel has.  Is that all I can do with the steamers, am I doing something wrong, or do I need to know more?  I assume I need to figure this out for the full feature FEF-3 first, then see if the reduced feature Bachmann Sound Value version offers less in this regard.
