I have 3 of the new SW1's and used TCS MC2 in 2 of them and a TCS T1 in the other works great and gives excellent motor control
It has an NMRA 8-pin plug installed.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
I would assume that the SW-1 that you ordered would be from the latest production from Walthers. If so they upgraded the electronics in the new ones and it has a nine pin plug on the board. I would think that one of the small decoders from TCS would probably fit.

I used a Lenz Silver MP in my older Walther SW1. The fit was pretty tight but it crawls at 0.33 sMPH on speed step 001. Lenz also makes a mini version but I don't remember if it has all the necessary wiring.
Whatever you get, be sure it has excellent BEMF for low-speed control. I would lean towards a TCS. Their speed control is terrific and that's what you want from a switcher.

Here is a link to a TCS Decoder hard wire install for that engine:

I just ordered an EMD SW1 from Walthers. Any suggestions on a decoder. I read there is limited space.
