I have been out of the hobby for several years and am ready to return. I will also be switching from HO to N scale. My question is this, I have a nearly new Command 2000 system, can I use this system with newer decoders from digitrax, etc? I know this system is outdated now, but I would like to stay with it if possible. I will be running Kato locos, with most likely DigiTrax DN163K0D decoders. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated!

You just have to program the decoders to deal with the limitations of the Command 2000. I would have to check the manual, but as I recall it is only 14 speed steps, it can only deal with the short addresses, and even then only a few of them. The locos addresses have to be programmed to specifice addresses assigned to the three on-board throttles. You select loco set "A" or "B" and it assumes the "A" or "B" set of channels. It seems like there was one more issue that I had to deal with to make them work 100%, but I am not remembering it off the top of my head.
Actually my best advice would be to get one of the decoders that you plan to use, program it for one of the "known" channels of the 2000 and just give it a try. Since you are planning on getting the decoders anyway, there is nothing to loose.
Yes it will work fine with the newer decoders. I still use the command 2000 on my n scale layout. I have Bachmann locos with the stock decoders and other locos that use Digitrax dz125 or 123 decoders.....Mike
