What is the difference between 8 bit and 16 bit sound? And I don't wanta hear "8 bits"?
The less bits, the greater the difference between each value. Think of it this way: You have a range of values. With 8 bits, there can only be 256 distinct values, maximum. With 16 bits, that's 65,536 values. That 256 times more values. Not double, more than 200x!
The only option that has a choice like that would be Digitrax sound decoders - the extra $5 or so street price difference between the 8 and 16 bit is WELL worth it. The 16 bit ones also can play 4 sounds at once instead of 3, and also don;t slow down when you blow the horn. The new 8 bit ones I think solve that problem too.

Loksound's 16 bit decoders utilize 8 channels allowing you to play 8 individual sounds at once !
