After seeing Pelle Soeborg's article on surface mount LED's, (Jan 2014) I resolved to do this to my loco's I don't know what the spec's are on Richmond Controls LED's are, so maybe one of you can help me. Looking at Mouser Electronics, I found some SMD LED's rated at 280 mcd, but 8200K temp. I think that will have a significant bluish tint, will it not? If so, can it be muted somehow? I'm going to use fiber optics as well. Bright, white Surface mount LED's are a little hard to find and the options limited. I'm opting to do my own due to cost. Mouser sells them for .11 cents apiece for 100. Anyone have any tips, advice,?
Lots of SMD LEDs on ebay in warm white and pure white in both the 0402 and 0603 sizes - dirt cheap too ....

I'm old and shaky, so prefer others solder leads on SMD LEDs. I typiclaly use Ulrich Models, which hnadles Richmond Controls LEDs. They don't specify color temp, other than the ones twoards blue they call their Sunny Whites. The more yellow Golden Whites are what I typically use for most of my loco lighting.

I've bought from this ebay seller a number of times. He also carries just the LEDs by themselves, but for this price I find it more worthwhile to buy them prewired ....

I've bought the ones from Ulrich as well - they are the 0402 size which are slightly smaller than the 0603 size. They work well for deck mount ditchlights where you have to get the whole thing IN the housing.

On Mike's recommendation, I bought some surface mount LEDs (Richmond Controls) from Ulrich Models and installed them in a pair of Athearn Genesis F7A locos, replacing those 1.5 volt incandescent bulbs. Super easy to work with, nice bright light. I recommend them.
