I have read here that some problems might occur when a loco is running on DCC and the decoder has not been set to exclude DC running.
Is this true of the Paragon 2 steam decoders? I can't find any information on the BLI site about turning DC off.

Change CV29 to "38"*. That will turn off dual-mode, so that your decoder only operates on DCC. It will also program it to operate at 28/128 steps. Here's a handy web site for that and for calculating long addresses using CV29.

38 is NOT the value to put into CV29 to turn DC operation off. That turns it ON. A value of 34 turns it OFF.

And this applies not only to Paragon2, but every brand and type of decoder that complies with the NMRA DCC Standards and Recommended Practices.
I have a BLI Paragon 2 Mikado that will inadvertently go full speed when I reach about half throttle if I don't program the dual mode off. Better be safe than sorry.

You want to leave the "28/128 speed steps" box checked (value=2) and uncheck the "DC Operation" box. You'll also want to check "Long loco address" box (value=32) in order to run 4-digit addresses. That will give you a total of "34". If your locomotive runs backwards and you want to it to run forwards, add a value of "1" to your total to get "35".
The total value is what you will enter into CV29 - i.e. CV29=34 Does that make sense?

It doesn't really matter what is in it now, just program it to the desired value and it will be changed.
In order to read CVs you need to enter programming track mode. (I have a Power Cab so I would assume it's accessed the same with the ProCab throttle.) You'll need to press the PROG/ESC button then press the ENTER buttton four (4) times. This should put you into programming mode. From there you can access the CVs and read their values. (This should be outlined in your PH Pro manual.)
As Chuck stated, you don't need to read CVs to enter the values for CV29. Just go into OPS mode (or programming on the main) and enter "29" for the CV then the value you want. Pressing PROG/ESC will exit you out of programming mode.
