Athearn Genisis GP38-2 Tsunamis

Question:

Is the Soundtraxx Tsunami sound decoder that comes pre installed in the locos, the same as the ones sold separately. I believe I read somewhere that it is a different decoder made for Athearn, with less functions.

Hobo9941,

See if you can find out the # decoder that comes with it and compare with this one:

SoundTraxx, makers of the Tsunami, provide a listing of supported CVs on their web site for the custom Athearn decoder.  You can then compare that with the full-fledged Tsunami CV listing to see what may or may not be the same.

I have purchased and installed at least one TSU-1000, AT-1000 and GN-1000 in my locos and just recently purchased and received the Genesis NS/PennCentral Heritage SD70ACe with DCC/Sound. It is my belief that all of the CV's are the same and programmable. The only difference is the type of horn that you can select for CV 115 for each particular model. When I removed the shell of the SD70ACe, the decoder and wire connections are the same as the other Soundtraxx Tsunami's.

Could you be confused with the decoders that Soundtraxx provided for Bachmann in the "sound value" locos?

That is entirely possible. The older I get, the more confused I get. Now, what was the question?  Whistling

No, the Soundtraxx decoder in the Genesis is the TSU-GN1000, specially made for Genesis locos.

However, the TSU-GN1000 can be purchased separately, if so desired.

The TSU-GN1000 is similar to the other Sundtraxx decoders in the 1000 series except that its main function outputs are 1.5 volt instead of the usual 14 volt to accommodate the 1.5 volt Athearn incandscent bulbs.

It has the same functions as the other Tsunami decoders in the 1000 series.

Frank, that is the decoder that comes pre-installed in the Genesis GP38-2.
