Source For Nano, Pico and SMD LEDs
Posted by gmpullman on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 1:16 AM

Hi Everyone,

There's always lots of interest in LED uses for model railroads and I am one who is always looking for neat stuff for lighting effects.

Last weekend at the Berea, OH, train show I Picked up an assortment of Nano Chip LEDs to play with and I thought I'd pass on the web site for the supplier of these neat little LEDs. I was looking for a warm white SMD for a headlight in a brass engine and found these nano and PICO super tiny LEDs that will fit even better!

Called Evan Designs, here's their site.

http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/

Take a look at some of their offerings and see if there's something there useful to you. I like the convenience of having the tiny Nano chips wired to a chip that will run either polarity and 7-19 volts! Pretty handy.

Hope you find this useful and I apologize if this has already been posted on these forums but I didn't see any search results for it.

Thanks, Ed

Ed:

That looks like a good source for those who don't want to fuss with soldering leads to the SMD LEDs. I'd say their prices are reasonable for what you are getting. It can be done cheaper of course, if you want to do your own soldering. That takes a bit of practise but once you have done it a few times it gets easier.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Ed:

I recently changed out the bulbs in a couple of On3 locos with smd and nano LEDs from Evan Designs. The nanos are just the right size to fit in markers, class lights, number boards, etc.,and the smd's worked great for the headlights and tender lights. I also want to note their customer service; when I emailed them a question about the rectifier/resistor units, they answered me within an hour.

I've since dimmed these lights significantly using decoder CVs,but it demonstrates how bright the tiny Nano chips are.
