Thanks again everyone. To make a long story short its the speaker. Tried a different speaker in the NW2 and the problem went away (this speaker happens to be too big for the unit). Put the NW2 speaker into a different unit and problem was the same on the different decoder. The failed speaker is 3/4" diameter, 0.2W. Now I need to replace it.

Strangely enough there is less static but sound comes on and off intermittently with no explanation. Checked speaker and it looks clean. Will try a different speaker tonight from another loco. Now that explanation,you gave about the speaker,,,sounds to me like a loose wire,bad connection,solder joint,at the speaker,or the decoder..A bad connection,will sometimes,sound like static...Check all those connections,associated with the speaker...
Mark, you have any photos of this install?
Its a TSU-BW-1000. The weight was milled down so that the decoder fits on top of the weight/motor. The speaker is in the cab pointing down with the enclosure visible through the cab window if you look close enough.
woodone Do you know which decoder was used in this install? With Tsunami TSU-750's there is no F5 or F6. Seems like you have TSU-1000 decoder if you have F5 and F6. Sure would like to see some photos of that install. Must be a real tight fit.

Whoever installed the decoder could have re-mapped the front and rear lights to be independant on F5 and F6 instead of having them as directional on F0.

If this was done with putting the speaker into the fuel tank area I would check to see if some debris has been stuck to the speaker. If so clean and then cover with cloth material to protect the speaker.
Have no ideas on the headlight issue.
Static can also come from a damaged speaker coil from being over-driven. Cheaper speakers can't handle the full volume output of a decoder - which the factories default to full volume. That's why I always make it a habit to turn the volume down to half FIRST before turning on the sound.
I've had this happen a couple times, engine sounds great, blow the horn and damage the speaker coil. Then there is a constant static over-laying all the sounds.
Try a different speaker and see if the problem goes away.
One of my friends had this problem. Turned out the speaker was wedged into a hole that was just slightly too small. He used his Dremel with a sanding disk to make the hole a little bit bigger and the static problem was gone.

I don't if this is your problem are not, but I had an SW8 go all static and when I turned it over the speaker magnet had picked up a piece of wire off the layout. Took it off, problem solved.

Loading a speed table should not make static sounds in the seaker where there was none before. I suspect more than just the speed step CVs were changed with this copy of another loco. If the new loco was originally at the default settings, try a decoder reset and start over. If it didn't buzz before, then it shouldn;t on the default settings. Rather than just completely copy a decoder definition from another loco, check for specifically what you want to change and make those changes. Leave the rest alone.

Just received my HO Kato NW2 that I sent out for a Tsunami sound install and everything worked great when i shut down the other night. This morning I used JMRI software to download a speed step table from another tsunami used on a Kato engine and when i started up had alot of static and the headlights did not work. Played around reset to default settings and the only thing that seemed to help was setting the speaker size to "tiny". This helped but there is still some static. Headlights still do not work.
Any suggestions?
