Thanks for the tip. I am planning on the LED from the original board to solder to the decoder.

I just clipped the short LED off and the shell still seems to not sit down flush it is about a 1/8 or so high.

I think it is the speaker? Has anyone had to mill their shell to make this decoder fit into the Silver Bullet loco?

did you ever find a fix for your issue. I wanted to do the same to mine. It has the same engine as the e8 so this decoder is perfect

EMD E5 silver bullet w MRC 1645 sound decoder

I am new here, and recently got back into model RR and loving it!

I recently installed the MRC sound decoder into the Kato EMD E5 silver bullet. Everything I had read stated that this fits. The decoder indeed does fit onto the frame (per the instructions of trimming plastic tabs). I started it and programmed the long address. It works great and sounds OK (seems a little soft, wish it were louder). I did have to trim off the back LED as the Silver bullet does not require it.

Here the issue, it seems the shell will not go all the way down??? I am not sure if it is the speaker or the short LED on the front. It looks like it should fit, but I think the LED is holding it up. Looking at the original light board, the LED seems to extend out farther and angles down. The 1645 decoder LED is short and not really able to bend down??? Any ideas?
