Well, I ended up sending the thing back to Bachmann for repair, and they sent me a DCC-equipped 2-10-2 instead (because the 4-8-2 Heavy was sold out). Not sue if I want to give this to my son or try to put sound in it. It has the stock Bachmann decoder in it and it growls and buzzes a little (although it's quieter than my Bachmann GP7). I ahve to replace both decoders with something better.

I might just get a decoder first and see if that solves the motor hum problem.

Glad you got a quick response, gatrhumpy.  NWSL has always been helpful to me.

If this is true, I'll have to replace the stock Bachmann decoder with a Tsunami and see if that solves the problem.

Not to break the rules, but it seriously sounds like a vibrator on a low setting.

Hi Jim, We offer 2 motors that are suitable for most N applications. Both have the same width and height; the difference is that one is 15mm long and the other is 20mm long:

I've not seen the inside of that particular engine so the thing to do would be to open it up and see if what we offer matches up. Our motors are DCC compatible and the current draw is such that it won't harm the decoder, and so if one of these fits it should be a direct swap-out. Thanks!

gatrhumpy

It's a buzzing noise from the motor, not the decoder.

If teh decoder is the problem, the noise would come from the motor, not the decoder.  The Bachmann decoders will make the motor buzz, it's caused by the low frequency PWM drive of the decoder.    I have three Bachmann DCC equipped locomotives, and they all buzzed.  I have replaced the decoder in two of the locos(just haven't gotten around to the third one yet), and they are quite now.

NWSL was very helpful to me recently when I needed a replacement motor for a Bachmann HO K4 Pacific.  They asked me to send them the defective motor so they could determine the proper size replacement.  This was critical because the loco's frame cavity is custom fit around the Bachmann motor.  They then also transferred the worm gear from the old motor to the new can motor for me.  I couldn't be more pleased with the result.

Good luck,

Tom

It took me to a "Thank you" page on the site.  I filled out all the fields though.

Does it take you to the main board when you hit the submit button with the address and phone number? I did that when I took out the e-mail address from the box. Weird.

You might try it again, gatrhumpy.  I just sent something using the same form and had no problems.

Make sure you fill out all the fields.  If that doesn't work, use a different browser to fill the form out.  I use Firefox and my query went through without a hitch.

Yeha, that form is crap. I could not send it because it kept telling me I had a hidden field or something like that.

You can contact NWSL directly with your query.  They are very good about responding.

Are you sure the motor is the problem?  If it has a Bachmann factory installed decoder, that might be the problem.  You might be better off replacing the decoder instead of the motor.

I want to replace the coffee grinder motor in my N scale Heavy Mountain. Does NWSL make a compatible motor for it?
