N scale sound decoder installation
Posted by CIB on Thursday, December 13, 2012 10:08 AM
I want to use Digitrax SDN144AO decoders in my Atlas GP-38-2 and SD-35's. Will these decoders go into the Aztec frames milled for MRC sound decoders?

If no one has any direct information about this, you should be able to find the size of both decoders on the manufacturers web sites. This should tell you if it will fit or not.

Elmer.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

Thank you gandydancer19. I think, before I invest the bucks for the milled frames and the decoders, (about $600.00), I would like to be somewhat sure I could still place the provided speakers in the fuel tank without replacing them. I've been told the Digitrax speakers provide better quality sound than the MRC speakers. I' m not comfortable soldering and de-soldering on a decoder costing $75-plus. What are your thoughts?

There are modelers around that do decoder installs as a part time job for hobby money.  If you are that concerned, I would look into having someone do them for you.  It should be much less than $600.

Thanks for your service too.

The best way to get an answer yo your question is to just email John Claudino at Aztec. aztecmfg@usa.net  He will be able to tell you what fits and maybe even do a custom mill if needed.
