I have a new Athearn Genesis GP9 and the sound is strong and sounds are great. I have not changed any settings. Very happy with the unit.

I put 4 speakers under each of the fan grills on my Athearn GP-35 and the sound is pretty darn good.
I mounted them using double sided speaker foam tape (3M)
Either way that's disapointing to hear. I have a GP-9 on the way with sound. :-(

Even though I've been inside my GP7 for cab painting and adding figures, I have yet to measure to see what speaker might fit
However one that might work is this speaker:

The dimensions are (2.1" Long x .70" wide x .57" thick).
Too long? Some frame milling might be required.
I agree the sound from the speaker is very weak. I prefer the sound from my older Proto 2000 GP.

Two local club members have them, and they are very weak sounding. As has already been stated, the problem is the speaker that Athearn put into the model and not the Tsunami decoder.
The lack of output from the Genesis GP9 (and GP7 which I have) is due to the speaker they used.
Just yesterday I was redoing all the sound settings on my other locos to bring things down so the GP7 was not drowned out. But what ever I do, it's not going to sound as good as my F units which have larger better speakers in them. Those MRC speakers actually work really well in the F units...MRC speakers and Tsunami sound that is.
The small shell of the GP7 (GP9 in your case) and the location in that shell chosen by Athean for the factory speaker limits the overall speaker size. I thought about maybe replacing the factory speaker with a high bass or bass reflex speaker. But I doubt that will help much.
I even thought about changing the factory sound board with a regular Tsunami 567 just to get the right horn for my prototype. But that is going to be one expensive horn. And with the weak sound as is, probably not worth it.
If it's a Tsunami, try playing with the reverb settings. I use Decoder Pro to set my CV's. Also try playing with the equaliser settings. Having the volumes at max is bad for the speakers. It might blow the speaker out. Joe
