Pin 1 is the orange wire.  As you have correctly surmised, if you get it backwards the only effect will be that the loco runs backwards.  Simply turn the plug around to correct this.

Yes, I should know this.  I have searched but can't find the answer.  I am installing a decoder in an Atlas RS-36.  There is a white triangle pointing toward a pin (which I assume is #1).  I have a Digitrax DH123P decoder with a harness.  In order not to install it backward, which is pin #1?  Orange or gray? 

I think the only problem of installing it backwards is the direction os reversed, which you can flip.
