Couple questions about the high bass speakers.
Is there any real difference in the high bass speakers, to justify replacing regular speakers?
Are the high bass speakers actually different, or do they just use a deeper enclosure to get more bass?
They are designed differently to tune their reproduction to the lower frequencies, at least an honest one would be. ie, different thickness of the cone material, possibly different coil. Without a larger enclosure though it would damp down the extra bass response, the larger enclosure isn't the only thing that increases the bass response, but without the larger enclosure, any other changes would be wasted. Of course, you don;t get somethign for nothing, so the high end suffers. Other then the bell though, there isn;t much high pitched sound in a locomotive.

I have used them. They do sound better to my ears. The speakers look more like mini guitar enclosure speakers with bigger magnets and a differently designed cone (EV speakers come to mind). They are bigger than other speakers I have used (mainly deeper from front to back).
I'm not sure the question of whether it would be worth it to replace other speakers with them is an easy one to answer. My approach is to leave my older sound installs alone and make changes going forward. All of my future sound installs will get high bass speakers (when they fit).

I use them and have been changing the older ones out, cant beat the sound difference. I use the 8 ohm bass reflex speakers,they are 2 watts and the size is 18x53x14.5 mm, they just fit inside most Kato and Atlas shells and average about 12.00 each. Try one and hear the sound quality, just my opinion Jim.
Thanks guys, for the opinions. I'll try a couple. I already have about 40 sound installs, so I won't be replacing them all any too soon. But I will try a couple in any new installs.

The Yahoo group RPMclinics-Rick Bell is a great source of detailed sound install info. They do one project at a time, but the files section contains PDFs of each one. It is NOT a group to join to ask questions, other than about the current project though.
Works now. There are some other links for high bass.
There are several high bass speakers--round, square and those with built on enclosures. The 1.22 round with large magnet, metal cone works very well. I make the largest enclosure possible using the sides of the loco or tender. I regularly put 1.06 HBs in diesels. Many times I cut and/or grind down the speakers for a custom fit that would not otherwise happen. For instance, I have two 1.06s in my SD90mac and an 1.06/1.22 combo in my BigBoy and both sound great. They work particularly well when you adjust the equalizer to maximize the sound files--to get the sound reproduction you like best.
A cautionary note, since you can really get those speakers pumping, I physically isolate(cushion) them to avoid unwanted vibration.
