Also, sound loco's will require a higher start voltage. Running a low speed could cause it to cut in/out.

I have Tsunami's I run on a Tech III every now and then--no problems. On the Tsunami chips installed by Athearn they have a different CV set up(and function control) vs aftermarket Tsunami's. Make sure you are using your Athearn manual for reference vs the Tsunami manual as the primary. On ours, I have gone in and reset the Athearn Tsunami chips to have CVs more like the aftermarket--this was in the manual.
You didn't mention how fast you were running the loco when it lurched. If it was at slow speed, then the problem could be related to how the decoder is set up for starting voltages, feedback, etc.

I did reset the decoder and then reprogrammed the short address and CV29 for the DC setting.
I would try resetting the decoder and then reprogram the adress and any speed table/sound settings accordingly. Because out of the bag the decoders work on analog.

A friend of mine has a Fox Valley HO scale Hiawatha with a Tsunami decoder. Last night he asked me to program it so that the sound would work on DC. I set CV 29 to 6 as the instructions said. Now the locomotive on DC lurches down the track making intermittant sounds. When I switch the track over to DCC the locomotive still runs fine.
The Tsunami manual says that the DC power pack should have a smooth power output and not be a rheostat. The DC power pack that I was using was a MRC HS-1. It works fine with my 3 QSI & 1 MRC sound locos if I run them on DC. I also tried connecting another modern CD power pack and the Hiawatha had the same issue. Does the issue sould like a CD power pack problem or is there something else going on? Are Tsunamis more susceptible to DC problems than other dual mode decoders?
