I would ask this question on the main page. One of our remembers here at the site "Darth Santa Fe" is a master at re-motoring old and odd ball engines. But, he is a DC only person at this point "still knows a lot about DCC " so I don't think he will see your question is the DCC section.

AHM Alco 1000 repower
Posted by Junk Runner on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 1:36 PM

This may seem to be a silly question to some of you , but not to me . I had recently bought a few older AHM Alco 1000s with vertical motors . I have seen these before and I have had a few ever since . Now my question . Has any ever done a repower by removing the armature and magnets , and putting a sealed can motor in their place ? And if you did , what brand and size of motor ? They are beautiful locomotives , not broken as some would be , great paint jobs ( one is a PC unit ) , I rebuilt one of them and the motor runs great , due to some cleaning and filing the magnets , but the worm gear is shot . Any help would be appreciated .
