NCE Power Pro "Clear" Consist
Posted by UPdiesel on Monday, August 1, 2011 6:56 AM

HI Guys, I have a old NCE Power Pro (still waiting for new chip). I have no trouble setting up Advanced consists. ( I have had up to 5 loco lash-ups)Stick out tongue

I can also delete or drop  a loco from my consists fine. The problem comes when I try to "Clear" a consist. It says it has cleared and the "cons" number does not "recall".  However none of the locos respond to individual addresses, they all think they are stiill part of the consist. If I dial in the lead loco address so i can drive it. it comes back up with "cons" in front of the address enstead of "loco".

If I go through and "drop" the locos one by one that works fine untill I get to the lead loco... then i get the message " Cannot drop lead loco"

I have tried resetting CV19=0 but that didnt work.

The only way I could do it was to do a Comnd Station Re-set !

PS:  the locos are 2x A/G SD70 fitted with Tsunami and a L/S Select in a Kato c-44w

Any help or thoughs appreciated, thanks.

I hope you realize and are trying to delete the advanced consist on the main line with all the locomotives in the consist on the track, and that clearing CV 19 to 0 must be done on the programming track.

If this is not working properly, you probably need to get an upgrade CPU chip from NCE.

There may also be a problem with your power supply being too weak to adequately send programming commands to the decoders.

I have the NCE system.  Maybe the chip is the problem.

I would ask how you are clearing the consist.  When it asks you what consist you want to clear, are you putting in the lead loco number, or are you putting in the actual consist number that is in the command station memory?

You should be able to clear the consist by putting in the lead loco number, but I (and another friend with the NCE system) have found that sometimes certain decoders will not accept being "cleared".  What does seem to work is to put in the actual consist number contained in the command station.

For example, if your consisted locos are 2112, 3113, 4114, and 5115, the command station will have assigned a consist number to that combination...let's say 127.  So the number that is really in CV19 will be 127.  When you want to clear the consist, enter 127 and then enter clear (or whatever it asks you to confirm your choice).  We have found that this works when entering the lead loco number (2112 for example) does not.  The problem is remembering what the actual consist number is.

I think, but could be wrong, that the ability to browse consists was something the new chip provided.

By the way, I do not find it necessary to put the loco on the programming track to clear CV19.  I have always been able to do that on the main by selecting CV19 and entering zero.

MAXMAN.. You got it in one !!

It was in fact requiring the consist number that the command system asks you to allocate to the consist to be deleted not the lead loco number. (All these numbers make it a tad confusing) Tongue Tied

All I needed to do was remember the consist number I assigned to it (in this case 99) and then when i cleared consist 99 all locos ran fine as individuals.

Thanks again heaps for all your expertise

You are welcome.  Sometimes I get one right.

You really should be able to delete the consist by entering the lead loco number.  I don't know why that doesn't work all the time.  But such is life.

When you get the chip upgrade I believe that you'll get a "browse consists" function on the handset.  Then you'll no longer have to remember which consist represents which group of engines.

Not to throw the proverbial monkey wrench into this thread, I have a few decoders that will not clear CV19 after killing/deleting a consist. One of them is a Loksound. Another is an old Lenz. And then there was a batch of TCS decoders that would not consist in the reverse direction unless you cycled the power by tilting one side from the rails. Those little gremlins always seem to make it into the machine no matter how hard we try to keep them out.

One thing I try to do when setting up a consist is use the first 2 numbers of the lead loco as the consist number. NCE by default starts using 127 and then 126 and so on but you can assign any 2 digit number you like.

Yeah, I have also recently learned to use the consist # to clear consists with my ProCab, (also waiting for the new chip, NCE: "a couple of months" away). Consist # works consistently.

I use the last two digits of the lead engine. I have multiple engines with the same first two digits and two of them are often leading two different trains. The last two digits are usually unique.
