how do I test a motor?

Thanks Guys. Motor is fried but I found a decent replacement.

Also, take your multimeter and do a continuity check to see if the pickups are connected to the motor.

Every model railroader should have a multimeter. You can get good ones for about $5.00. I have three and they compare very closely to my expensive meter and Scope. Some rivet counters will disagree/

I'm not sure which one the Lionel #0625 is, but all HO motors run on DC. Figure out how to remove the body and connect wires from the opwer pack directly to the motor. If you get a humming sound when you apply power, the mechanism could be jammed.

Just bought a Lionel HO #0625 Southern Pacific on Ebay. It lights up but does not run. Linkage is good and gears are good. How do I test the motor to see if it needs replaced? Its a beuty and Id love to run it!  Thanks, Mark.
