My Athearn SW1500 and Bachmann DCC
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 1, 2011 11:55 PM

Will my two powered HO scale SW1500s run on my Bachmann DCC or do I need a certain DCC for them?

I assume you are talking about the ez-command system. The big question is if they have decoders or not. If they do, they will work with any DCC system. If not, they need them or they won't work. Note, thought, that you will not be able to program CVs with the ez-command, and are limited to only ten addresses.

Hope this is the answer you were looking for.

Any locomotive should run on any DCC system.  If your locos (regardless of manufacturer) are DCC, they'll run on any DCC system.  If your locos are DC, a DCC command station will run them, but only one at a time and only using a particular function command on the controller.  If your locos are "older" DC, try not to keep them on a DCC powered layout to long, some motors don't like that and will burn up.

Do you have the instruction manual?  If so, it should tell you how to run it.

Both SW1500 are undecorated with the chips already planted in them.

my sw1500 are new and both have the dcc chip in them.

I plan on getting some DCs to convert to DCC and run on my layout.

Go to Tony's Trains and read his DCC Primer.  This should answer most of your questions about DCC systems and DCC equipped locomotives.

Sorry, but this is not correct.  Not all DCC systems are capable of running a DC locomotive.

You are correct.  I forgot about the newer MRC.  Any others?

When you say the bachmann walk-around system do you mean the Dynamis?

Basically your original answer is Yes.  Just set each loco to a different address and you'll be able to run them separately.

Actually, steam, that's incorrect.  With the E-Z Command, you can run nine (9) DCC-equipped locomotives (although not all of them at once) AND one (1) DC locomotive.  Digitrax also allows you to run a DC locomotive with their systems.

LMD, button 10 (bottom right) is the DC address on the E-Z Command.  It also serves as your light button.

Well if you have the DVD that came with your DCC system, why are you asking questions that are answered on the DVD?  What information from the DVD is making you confused?

There is a way to run 10 addressed locos (1-10) with the EZ-Command. Connect a Bachmann power pack to the EZ-Command controller with the cable that was provided for this purpose. Button 10 will cease being the analog address and will become a 10th DCC address button as well as the light function control until the power pack is disconnected at which point button 10 will revert to being the analog control button.

The DVD did not address using the Bachmann E-z command DCC with an Atlas Code 100 terminal track.

With the booster, yes.  With just the E-Z Command and 1A: Expect 2-3 locomotives max.

I have a transformer with the DCC controller, so how many would I need for the amount of power for my layout then?

The power pack that came with the EZ-Command provides 1 amp of power for the controller. Only one controller can be used on the layout unless it has multiple tracks that are not connected to each other, then each track can have it's own controller. Using a larger power supply won't help as the controller overloads and trips at 1 amp and the larger supply would likely damage the controller. If you need more power consider getting a booster to go inline between the controller and the layout. For running a DC loco with the EZ-Command you need to use button 10 unless you've plugged a Bachmann DC power pack into the EZ-Command controller. In that case the DC loco would be powered by the DC pack and button 10 would be used for a 10th DCC address.
