Alright so I installed the decoder about a week ago. The staff at my LHS figured out a way that I could fit a QSI small oval speaker in the long hood over the truck. I put the capacitor over the other truck.

Thanks for all the advise.

the link is for a s-1 not a rs-2 ,any how I've put the atlas style board in an atlas rs-3 & and a athearn rtr rs3 there tite The atlas was a lot of grinden on the wieght block, the athearn was easyer ( these were my FIRST installs period) but both were educational . If I recall finding a place for the cap was the tough part ended up drilling a hole the same dia as the cap from inside of shell upthru the cab ,and just shove it in hole as shell goes on ,cant see it ........go to the link above and find the rs1,2,3 and take it from there ...Jerry

I've done an S2, RS-1, and an RS-2.  Use the Tsunamis that Soundtrax recommends.  I put the speakers in the cabs.  I also used the mini oval speaker and enclosures, however, they are a tight fit so may not be for everyone as they are not just a drop-in install.

Sorry, I miss read your post. The AT1000 will most likely be your best bet.

When I first read your post I was thinking about the TSU-1000 decoder. My bad.

The link that I showed you was for a RS-1 and the install was done before the AT decoder was on the market.

The surface mount capacitors are the two orange colored things that have the blue wires attached, and is sitting over the motor. You still might want to use them as you will need to find a place to mount the 220 UF capacitor and room is very much limited. These are much smaller in size. The install link shows two 100 UF surface mount caps wired in parallel. This will give you 200 UF which will work just fine.

The soundtraxx website recommended the AT-1000 for the RS-2. What do you mean by surface mount capacitors?

Thanks,

Take a look at this install it is for a RS1 but I think they are much the same.

Tight fit and I don't think you will be able to fit a AT-1000 decoder inside this one.

The photos are of a TSU-750 decoder and using small surface mount capacitors.

Adding Sound to a Proto 1000 RS-2
Posted by steamfreightboy on Sunday, June 12, 2011 4:50 PM

Has anyone installed a soundtraxx AT-1000 in a Proto 1000 RS-2? How hard is it to fit in the speaker? Install the actual decoder? Lights? Any tips?

Thanks for the help,

sfb
