Startup Sounds
Posted by hobo9941 on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 10:01 PM

Why? Given the large number of people with momentary power dropout problems and slightly dirty track, why does Tsunami and other sound decoders have startup sounds? Every time a loco hits a tiny dead spot, the decoder reboots, again and again. Under perfect conditions, you would only hear the startup sounds once at the beginning of a session. So why include them at all? Personally, I don't need to hear every loco on the layout go through startup sounds when I turn on the power. Lose the startup sounds, or include a CV to disable them!

Not sure how to take care of this when you hit dead spots other than CLEAN your track, make sure you have current/feeders as needed for the size of the layout.

As far as turning on power to your layout and not wanting certain locos to start up, reading the manuals would help. All the QSI decoders I have will not start up until loco address is chosen and F6 is selected on the throttle. " they came that way".  On the Tsunami's CV 113 will cure this problem " Quiet Mode Timeout Period" it will also shut the loco down after you have stopped it. How long before it shuts down depends on the values you enter into CV 113. And it will not start up until you address it.

Edit , The BLI locos will not start up unless their addresses are called up also.

Another misinformed person making general assumptions.

When the Tsunami hits dirty track and a power interruption occurs, there are no start-up sounds.  It just picks up where it was before with a lower RPM motor sound.  There is no engine cranking sound other than at initial start up.  AND - you will not get any start up sound (Engine cranking) unless you shut the engine down previously, or shut the layout off.

And guess what?  The Tsunami's DO have a CV that determines when the start up sound (engine starting) occurs.

I think he means the OP (hobo). And I have to agree, the things you are complaining about can all be solved by the following:

1.) CLEAN YOUR TRACK!

2.) RTFM = Read the freaking manual.

Yeah, I see what you mean.

The poor OP is overlooking his dirty track problem by assuming that his start up sounds are occurring over and over when they are not.
