Are you looking for a stand-alone decoder that will just create "grinder" sounds? I don't think the programming would be much of an issue. I've put some sounds into Digitrax SFX decoders. Yes, you can do some non-standard stuff, and that's a more difficult problem, but you could replace the motor sounds with your grinder noises, so they would only be heard when the train is moving. Replace the bell with a sound that you want to toggle on and off with F1, and use the other "momentary" effect buttons for one-time sounds.
Which ever you choose, though, you will need a programming unit. These are special purpose boxes, like the Digitrax PR3, that allow you to transfer sounds from your computer to the decoder. You can't do this on a programming track.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
I am looking to run custom sounds for a grinder train I am modeling. Dose anyone know if there a DCC decoder or just a sound unit available in N Scale to which I can upload and program custom sounds to? If no such item exists, any other ideas how I can get sound effects for this train. Any ideas will help.
Thanks,
Anthony.
