NCE Switch-8 Programming With Zephyr
Posted by TEAM NSCALE on Sunday, March 20, 2011 12:49 PM

I'm new to forum, and DCC.  Progressing with wiring and decoder installations on layout. Came upon a problem with the Switch-8, and it's probably me.

When I initially "fired-up" my first Switch-8 with two tortoises the two switches operated great from OUT 1/2 and3/4. So, I progressed to change the address of OUT 3/4 from switch 2, to switch 14 (which coincides with switch number on layout).

Followed directions, restarted, and OUT 3/4 automatically cycled the tortoise once, then would not respond. So, tried programming again...same thing.  So, thinking maybe output went bad, I moved to OUT 5/6. Fired up, and switch once again worked.

I then tried to reprogram OUT 1/2 to my corresponding switch number...... same thing happens. So now I've got a lot of my outputs "locked-up" from trying to reprogram address. Again, once the system is powered-up, the ones I "messed-up" will go from "C" to "T", then back to "C" one time automatically, then will not repond.

I know the first time I tried program, i did NOT cyle through a "c"/"t" a couple of times.  However, after looking on-line, it appeared that was my issue.  So, the next couple of attempts, I cycled the reprogrammed number through "c"/"t" couple of times - but same result. Is there a "trick" on programming the turnouts on the Zephyr???

I'm obviously doing something wrong pre/during/post programming. Im using Zephyr - programming in DIR. Ideas?

Thx

Exact steps are slightly unclear. However, for the first outputs, set the rotary switch to 0, put the jumper on. You do NOT use program mode on your Zephyr or any other DCC system. You simply use Switch mode to select the desired address, and press either C or T. The Switch-8 remembers what address the command was sent to and this will be the address for that output.

This is where the instructions get less than clear, as it says for the next outputs to move the rotary switch to the next position and follow the above steps - the above steps including putting the program jumper. I would suggest first trying just turning the roarty switch to the next positions, then selecting a new switch address on the Zephyr and hitting C or T. Continue on for all 8. Do NOT turn off track power in between. The Zephyr sends out a series of switch commands on power up, and if the jumper on the switch 8 is in the program position, it willr eprogram to that address. When you have completed all 8, remove the program jumper.
