The Athearn come with Quick Plug not NMRA connectors the last I saw in the ads for the HO scale version

The newer Athearn boards have both an NMRA 8-pin medium socket, and a 9-pin JST plug.

The Athearn come with Quick Plug not NMRA connectors the last I saw in the ads for the HO scale version. For a SoundTraxx, cut back the shrink to remove the 9 pin connector.

The below link covers that if you go with the Tsunami. Store the link and look through the site.

Roy,

I am assuming that you have an Athearn engine?  It should have a standard NMRA  plug/socket for a decoder.  There really no specific 'plug & play' decoder that I am aware of.  What you need is a sound decoder with a turbocharged EMD 710 engine with HEP.  Again I am not aware of a specific sound set for that engine.  There are EMD 645 with HEP available for sure.  I would look throught Soundtraxx Tsunami or QSI sound decoders to see if they have a 710/HEP sound file available.  That full width car body should be able to hold the decoder and speaker.

BTW, 'plug & play' decoders generally replace the existing DC light board in the engine.

Have you tried the web sites of the major sound decoder manufacturers?  If not, I would suggest you check out Soundtrax, QSI and Loksound.  If you find what you are looking for, then do a google search for online vendors.  Tony's Train Exchange and Litchfield Station are two reliable online dealers.

Good luck!
