Athearn P42 re-motoring
Posted by Tiki Man on Saturday, February 26, 2011 10:01 AM

Hey guys, wondering if any of you replaced motors in an athearn P42, or any other type of locomotive made by athearn? Looking at kato and Proto Power West, and don't k now which ones to use, since the athearn motor is a specific length and width. Can anybody help? Thanks,

I have remotered many times with the Kato unit(with flywheels) Keep in mind they use the hex ends, which Athearn has gone to as well. You may or may not have to adapt the driveline, depending on what you have. I am going to remoter my P42 with NWSL and use a higher turning RPM motor since the stock P42 is too slow and adding DCC just slows it down even more. I have not figured out which one yet, but the guy there says he is getting in some faster turning motors. Richard
