need help installing decoder pro on new laptop

I have been on the jmri site and am running around in circles trying to get the program installed,

This should not require me to ask the jmri users group. can anyone out there guide me step by step? /i will phone anyone who is willing to do this.

Well, without any information about the nature of your difficulties except "running around in circles", it would hard to provide any specific suggestions to help.

How about if you stop running in circles, go to the bottom-left corner of the JMRI home page, and click on the install instructions for the type of operating system you're using?  Then just follow those instructions.

If you continue to have problems, they have some troubleshooting instructions/links imbedded in those instructions that may get you past whatever issue you're having.

If that still doesn't help, I would certainly ask on the JMRI users group.  You won't get any better answers than from the people who actually write the code and put together the install packages.

And if you do ask for help, either here or on the JMRI group, please supply more info!  Here's what the JMRI list suggests as the minimum:

+ Computer make and model
+ Computer Operating System
+ JMRI version installed
  + if you have just upgraded, from  which version
+ JAVA version installed
+ Interface device (if any)
+ DCC system in use
      (the specific model, not just the manufacturer)
+ Any other DCC devices in use
+ Com port in use (if any)
+ Baud Rate settings (if known)
+ Specific details of your difficulty including error messages if any. 

Depending on the nature of the problem, you may need to supply even more
information, but this is the absolute minimum required for anyone to give you
accurate answers.

That's the one. 

All the way down in the bottom-left corner of that page (you may have to scroll down to see it), there's a section titled "Supported Computers", and it lists Windows, Mac, and Linux. 

Click on whichever OS you're trying to install it under.  It will take you to another page with directions for installing JMRI under that specific OS. 

Those OS-specific pages also have either some basic install troubleshooting info, or links to some, or both.

If those OS-specific pages and/or the related troubleshooting info don't get you past your issue, I'd strongly recommend posting to the JMRI users group as I noted in my original reply, giving as much of the detail (that I also outlined in my original post) as possible.

Again, the folks who write the code and assemble the install packages (and who write those install instructions and troubleshooting tips!) are the best-equipped to give you advice to get you going.  However, in order for anyone to help you, you have to give them more details than, "I'm running around in circles."

The only problem I've had with Decoder Pro is getting it to see the USB connection to the LAN.    So I have had good luck with getting the ports set up first and remembering which port is assigned.    That port sometimes has to be manually entered into the Decoder Pro software when setting up, otherwise it won't communicate with your DCC system.      For me I have to set up the physical and software ports on some systems. 

Sometimes the software in DP says your connected, but the hardware isn't set up.

Is this a problem not knowing how to download and install an application on a computer? Or are you having troble getting JMRI to install once it's been down loaded.

So why not just ask this on the JMRI Group? Here is better?

 On the link you're using, in the middle click on JMRI 2.10 Production Version,

Under the second heading are long links, one each for MacOS, WIndows, and Linux. CLick on the one for your computer and save the file. Setup after it downloads depends on what computer OS you have. Configuration after it's installed depends on which computer interface you have for your DCC system.
