Dropped a DN163K2 into my Kato RS2 last night and fired it up on the ole Foamboard Central. All seems good except for one seemingly strange behavior. When I switch the light "ON", the speed jumps up about two steps. Still controllable - not the runaway I've read about on other posts - but still slightly jarring. Switch the light "OFF' and the speed returns to the original setting. I have not done any programming yet so all settings should be factory default. Control console is a "vintage" i.e.old MRC Command 2000. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Your problem may be mismatched speed steps. The default setting for the Digitrax decoders 28/128 where, if I remember correctly, the Command runs at 14 speed steps. You may be able to re-program the decoder to use 14 steps but you can't do that with the Command 2000.

Thanks so much, that was it. Your recollection is correct - the Command 2000 defaults to 14 speed steps. However, if the engineer pays a little more attention to the job at hand, he can switch to "Advanced" mode which is 28 steps. That resolved the speed problem.
If I wasn't such a stingy old tightwad, I'd upgrade to equipment that was made in this century.

Glad to have been of help. I started out in DCC with the Command 2000 and soon found that I wanted to do more. I bought a Digitrax Zephyr and have been very well pleased. Evolution is slow but for us old timers it sometimes results in more fun.
