NCE Power Pro Question
Posted by medickistler on Sunday, February 13, 2011 3:03 PM

Question regarding NCE Power Pro 5amp system.  I plan to run 10-15 DCC engines on a layout im currently building.  I have purchased the NCE Power Pro 5amp system.  Will that 5amps be sufficient or do I need another 5 amp booster.  I plan to break the layout into 2 possibly 3 Power districts.  I was going to use the 5amp booster with 3 EB1's.  Any suggestions that would be better such as should I go with 2  5 amp boosters and then break it into three power districts or is there a better way.  Layout is smaller being about 14 X 11.  There will be 2 smaller yards and several industrial sidings.  Any and all suggestions will be appreciated!

10-15 running all at the same time? Some with sound? You might be pushing it with just 5 amps. depending on the locos. Oh, what scale? If N scale, 5 amps is plenty for that many. If HO - divid it up to 4 power districts witht he option to add a second booster to power 2 of them, but start witht he one. If it turns out to not be enough power you cna add the secodn bosoter later. If it works fine, then you saved a bunch of money by not buying an extra booster.

10-15 running the same time on a layout that size sound a bit much.  If the loco's are parked they take up less current than when running.  In that case you should be ok. Running a second booster is never a bad thing if you ever plan on having people over to run them all the same time.

Welcome

Are you planning on any lighted passenger cars? All the locos will be running at the same time? What else is going to be feeding off the booster?

The Lyout is about 11 X 15.  I plan on having a total of 10-15 on the layout not all running at the same time.  At first not all will have sound but eventually all will.  Also the scale will be HO.  Im into freight so all freight cars and no passanger cars.  I plan to only run the track off of the boosters I will have a seperate power supply for the aux. items.

I have the NCE Power House Pro 5 amp system on my layout which measures 42' x 25'.  I do not have separate power districts, and I do not have any additional boosters.

For a 14' x 11' layout, that is sufficient.  You won't need any additional boosters, and you won't need to break it up into separate power districts.

First of all, for a solo operator on that size layout, there is no way you are going to be running 10 to 15 engines at the same time.  At any one time, I have more than 30 engines sitting on my layout, some powered up, some not.  Those with sound that have been powered up sit there on the layout making sounds but consuming little power.  But, I can only run 4 at a time on my double mainline without losing complete track of them.

Second of all, if you do need more power in the future, you will know it.  Then, buy a booster or break the layout into separate power districts.

Not all running, then 5 amps will be fine.
