Recommendations for a new DCC System
Posted by bear's lair on Sunday, January 30, 2011 6:06 PM

I am contemplating getting a new DCC system for my layout, rite now i am just using a basic   Bachman E-Z command dcc my Lhs has both the   Digitrax Zephyr Command Control Basic Starter Set and the      MRC Prodigy Express on sale for the same price. I am using the   Soundtraxx Tsunami's and Quantum (QSI). decoders both steam and diesel. in HO Scale. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Bear.

For the same price, the Zephyr is the much better deal.  It's only drawback (in my eyes) is the old power pack form factor.  But that can be fixed with add-on walk-around throttles when you desire to do so.

The MRC Prodigy Express needs to cost substantially less to make up for lack of some features that you may want down the road.  The Z has significantly higher power output.  The Z has CV readback on the programming track (and has a separate programming track output).  Computer interfaces capable of running Decoder Pro are available and readily integrate with Digitrax DCC.  MRC will not integrate with computer interfaces that work with Decoder Pro - you have to use a stand-alone interface setup.

If given the choice between the 2 I'd say the Zephyr hands down.  Make sure you get the new one though.  The LHS might still be stocking the old one. The new version is called the XTRA has more power and features.  If he doesn't have it ask if he can order it.  Be patient, it's worth the wait.

Between those two choices, the Digitrax Zephyr wins hands down due to its easy expandability and upgrade path.

I would go Digitrax due to the LAN connectivity making the system very flexible and expandable.    For those sound decoders you will likely want a program booster.   I would also get a USB/LAN interface either the PR3 or rrcircuits so that you can hook up your computer.    With a computer and the Decoder pro software you can have a number of throttles for use as well as easy programming, etc.

Be sure and consider if you want wireless, infrared or radio and whether you want duplex wireless.

I would take a look at the NCE equipment as well, they have a lot to offer as well (Check out their website).

As someone who JUST switched to DCC about a week ago, you have to weigh what's important to you.

For me, the most important thing was portability. I wanted something that was the smallest DCC system on the market for ease of portability. The NCE system fit the bill, and had the added benefit of being one of the cheapest (for the features and portability). The entire booster and power was built inside the PowerCab. It means that in order to operate the train, the PowerCab hand-held throttle has to be plugged into the fascia-plate. I have a small 2.5' x 4' N scale layout, so this was fine by me.

If you can, go someplace where you can try out the throttles, or at least hold them in your hand and push the buttons.  The throttle is your interface to the system.  If you like the throttle, then chances are you'll be happy.  Alternately, if the throttle isn't comfortable and convenient for you, it will leave a less positive impression of the oveall system.

I have a Lenz System 100, with two throttles, the Dispatcher and the Engineer models.  I like the great, big buttons on both of them.  However, when compared with the Digitrax throttles, you can see right away that you can get many more buttons, and therefore more "immediate" functionality, if you're willing to live with cell-phone size buttons instead of the 1/2-inch square buttons on the Lenz.  Also, look at how the throttle works.  Comparing the two Lenz throttles, the Dispatcher is far superior for anything other than simply running a small number of locomotives.  To be truthful, I never use the Engineer throttle, I can't remember the oddball key sequences for simple, common tasks, and I wouldn't dream of trying to program decoders with it, even though in theory that can be done.  Instead, I use the Dispatcher and it is a very comfortable interface for me.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Digitrax is a good brand and has some good starter sets with most of the stuff you need. The zephyr would be good and most other digitrax sets also.
