Here's an installation guide on the soundtraxx site for a B23-7 which should be pretty close to your U30.  It even has pictures.

I'd still use two speakers and mount them in the A frame, that's what it's there for. To fit a decent size speakr with enclusire you'd probably have to cut away the A frame to make room. And when there's room for a BIG speaker, putting in a small one to cram it in is a waste of effort and won;t sound nearly as good.

I do see though that Soundtraxx has a decoder for the Atlas U30

Agreed on the QSI.  I totally blanked out on that one.  QSI is what is in the Atlas Gold loco's which is pretty much the exact thing as the Silver but with speaker and decoder installed.

Can you get the Atlas QSI decoder? I though the ones fitted to the Atlas as standard was a cut down version of the QSI. Is the Revolution A the Atlas one and the U the universal one?

Or swap it for the QSI which would be a drop in fit, and a pair of speakers to fit the A frame - in other words, the way they designed it from the factory. No enclusore to mess with, no fitment problems.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I have opened the bag but the decoder has not been soldered or used in any way. Maybe I can swap it. Will the standard TSU-1000 fit? I could hardly find room for the standard decoder when pluged into the board.

If I can't swap it, then there may be a decoder for sale on a well know auction site soon.

It has been awhile since I have been into one of these. Is there not enough room on the front weight to machine out some room for the AT board. The speaker mounting I would leave as it is. As I recall you are going to have to find a place for the capacitor too.

has the decoder been opened yet? If not you might be able to swap it for a standard TSU-1000 or

TSU-750.

Installing a Tsunami AT1000 in an Atlas U30B (HO Scale)
Posted by PaulWhitt20 on Saturday, January 29, 2011 3:05 AM

Hi, I am about to start installing a Tsunami AT1000 sound decoder and 1” speaker with baffle in an Atlas Silver DCC ready U30B. Part number #10 000 440 HO U30B Locomotive.

The installation looks a bit more involved than I first thought as the Tsunami decoder is longer than the original board and will protrude into the A frame for the dummy speakers. So I may have to cut out the original dummy speaker weight to make room for the decoder, then find somewhere else for the speaker. Will it fit in the fuel tank?

Any tips on how to install the decoder and speaker?

Thanks for your help.
