1. Soundtraxx and QSI make sound decoders.   The spakers are the key element and in a steamer with a good tender you normally get great sound.    The tender can be made as the enclosure.

2. Several mfgs make N scale decoders--Digitrax, TCS, Soundtraxx, QSI among others.    You can just check out their websites and see the product listing.       Steam vs diesel and the available space and format are the key questions when figuring out which decoder, sound or otherwise that will work best.

The Soundtraxx TSU-1000 heavy steam version is what you would look for. It has the sounds for the 4-8-4

Soundtraxx would be the best bet

Here's a thread on Yahoo groups about an install.

The reason I attached this is that there are capicitors that should be clipped from the Bachmann.

First, I am no expert with DCC (heck, I'm probably a novice).  What I do know is read and research as much as you can.

I would go to Digitrax web site (http://www.digitrax.com/) or SoundTraxx (http://www.soundtraxx.com/dsd/tsunami/).  They have guides and charts that you can use to select what you are looking for.

Good Luck!

Can't help you with the decoder question, but my advice is to edit the title of this thread to something like "Bachmann GS4 Steam ", rather than "DCC".

The subject title of DCC is so generic that some who can help you may not even look at this thread.

Hi all. I have bought a Ho scale Bachmann GS4 Steam with DCC loco for a friend, and would like to know if there are any firms that make a sound decoder for this loco. Also, who makes the best drop in decoders for Atlas and Kato N scale locos, and any with sound?

Thanks.
