NCE Power Cab upgrade?
Posted by Graffen on Thursday, January 20, 2011 6:15 PM

Hi, I asked about this in another thread but thought it better to start a new one instead.

I have been following a thread on the UK RM-Web forum. and there they have said that a new upgrade will be available for the Powercab by the 10:th of February.

As I´m interested in buying a Powercab, I thought it best to wait for the upgrade before buying one.

They also stated that a upgrade for the ProCab would be coming this summer.

Does anyone know anything more about this?

Sounds liek if you get one now there's a free upgrade.

The 3 cab supprot is extremely useful as it allows you to have a computer interface AND an AUI, or computer interface AND a second cab. Not being able to use the AUI and a computer interface really limits the usability of the whole thing.

The 6 loco recall stack, OTOH, I still fail to see why everyone is so hyped on this like it's the second coming or something. Above 2 or 3 it's the same or less keystrokes just to enter the loco number. My Digitrax throttle can do up to 16 recalls - and I NEVER use that feature. I tried it once, when I first got it and was goign through the manual checking all the features. Or does NCE's use of the term mean somethign else? With Digitrax, the number of 'recalls' has no bearing on how many locos you cna run from a single throttle. I can start a loco and get it running, then switch to another and start that up to the limit of the command station, in the case of my Zephyr 12, or with a Chief it would be 120. The most I could recall without touching one of the number keys to key in an address would be 16, but to scoll through that many is more 'key presses' (you use the knob - I suspect the wheel is used on NCE) then to just key in the loco number, even is if is a 4 digit address. If 'recall' on NCE means you can now have 6 locos runnign instead of 2, then I'd say that IS a benefit, although I generally don't like having an unselected loco running - even when I have a train runnign for background ambience it's selected on a throttle so should disaster strike I can grab the throttle and immediately stop it. The oen time I tried runnign more than I had throttles for was when I tried see how many locos I could run at the same time before my Zephyr overloaded, I got up to 8 but felt like Lucy in the chocolate factory episode trying to keep them from all running in to one another.

With the NCE ProCab you can have 6 locomotives or consists in the stack.  There's a key marked "RECALL" that scrolls through the choices.  Theoretically you can run six separate locomotives or consists at one time with only one cab, but I have never tried more than two because it's difficult to keep track of six trains at the same time, even on a large club layout with dual main lines.

I don't know what NCE could do to upgrade the Power House Pro system, but the basic PowerCab is limited to two throttles and two recalls in the stack, with limited power output.

Is it just a rumor, there is no mention about an upgrade on NCE's web site. I just asked the question on the Yahoo Group lets see what comes out of it.

Anyway I will ask the NCE's rep next week at the Big E show, I will know for sure then.
