New Bachmann HO 4-6-0 DCC with which Tsunami Sound ?
Posted by rockislandnut on Monday, December 6, 2010 1:22 PM

I've a good chance on purchasing this Bachmann HO 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler.

Road Name: Chicago Northwestern #238 (63" Driver)

Product Information

Bachmann Trains sounds off with an extensive line of DCC Sound-equipped Spectrum® locomotives. Working closely with SoundTraxx®, we’re pleased to offer HO, On30 and Large Scale engines equipped with Tsunami® sound technology. Using sounds taken from real locomotives, modelers can add a new level of realism to their railroads with a broad palette of prototypical sound effects and DCC functions. Plus, the dual mode decoders work on both DC and DCC layouts automatically. So break the silence on your railroad with our Spectrum® DCC Sound On Board™ locomotives.

Decoder features include:
  • authentic sound effects uniquely appropriate to each model including whistles, bells, chuff's, and air pumps
  • additional sounds include dynamo, injectors, coupler clank, water stop and more
  • three whistles to choose from in each model
  • whistle can be played in real time to create authentic whistle signals
  • high quality 16-bit digital sound
  • advanced motor control features including Load Compensation and Silent Drive to provide smooth, quiet operation
  • supports all recognized programming methods

Bachmann says it has a motor decoder with a Tsunami SoundTraxx sound decoder installed but I do not know which SoundTraxx sound decoder. Could it be maybe the TSU-750?

I'm guessing it is this one ( above ^ ) and not sure just what whistle, chug to use since it does not state anything about C&NW steam sounds. Hmm

If it's not the right sounds for a C&NW Ten Wheeler then so be it for my friends will never know the difference anyway. Smile, Wink & Grin

Anyone running one of these Bachmann Ten wheelers with Soundtraxx??

It's an OEM version of the Tsunami made for Bachmann. There are a few differences but most of the features are there.

I run the Spectrum 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 with the Micro Tsunami light steam decoder.

I have never heard the chug from the prototype you mention. I thought a chug was pretty much a chug.

I simonize the chug with the valve action as best as I can.

I have considered the SoundTraxx cam as the Micro has the wire for this option but gave it up as I am happy with what I have.

Remember, we are boys playing with toys.

It's basically a "simplified" Tsunami. I have one in my 2-10-0 and I'm very happy with it.  A regular Tsumani has hundreds of CV options. The Spectrum version still has plenty of options and choices, but doesn't support a few things like "Fireman Fred" talking and IIRC doesn't have the reverb effects.

All the specs for the factory installed Tsunami are at the Bachmann site or the SoundTraxx site. You can download the document to your PC. Store the links in Favorites or Bookmarks.

You can compare them to the Tsunami you buy and install yourself.

Bachmann is not short changing you like some have accused Bachmann of.

I'd have to go to the Soundtraxx website to get the exact numbers, but the Spectrum Tsunami has all the chuffs, whistles and bells of the regular Tsunami...something like 12 chuff sounds, 20 whistle sounds, and at least several bell sounds. It also has Back EMF and in general is an excellent sound and motion decoder. The only thing it's lacking is as I mentioned the reverb and maybe the EQ controls, and "Fireman Fred" (crew chatter, fireman shoveling coal, etc.). Like I say, I don't know the exact numbers, but say an old Soundtraxx "LC" sound decoder maybe has three horn/whistles and bells, and maybe 6-7 other user settings like lighting, speed and momentum CVs, etc. The regular Tsunami has maybe 100 different user options and settings, whereas the "budget" one Spectrum uses has maybe 60. It still gives you a LOT of options to set the sound just the way you want.

I have a couple of the Bachmann 4-6-0's with sound. You will not be disappointed as they are great runnning and sounding engines, at least in my opinion.

I also have a few BLI and I prefer the Bachmann sound over the BLI sound.
