DCC AB Set question
Posted by Motley on Sunday, November 21, 2010 10:08 PM

I'm looking at getting the Walthers AB Set P2K E7 DCC w/Sound. Do these both have a seperate DCC address? If so, do I have to consist them together like it was two separate locos?

Also, what kind of decoder are in these? QSI?

QSI and out of the box they are probably both on 3. You can do it however you like. You'll have ot mess around with CV21 and CV22 so the functions work right in a consist - ie, only the horn and bell on the lead unit work, dynamic brake works on both, etc.

Aha, ok thanks Randy. I'll just set it up like a regular consist then. I just wasn't quite sure how they were setup from the factory.

Part of why I guess they are so expensive - 2 sound decoders. They aren't wierd like the PCM FA units that has the decoder in one and speakers in the other, with jumpers connecting them. These are quite conventional.

Oh wait, never mind - just looked at the Walthers page and it says the B units are dummies if you get the DCC/Sound version. Both are powered only if you ge tthe DC versions. So - no consisting, no nothing. Just $90 for a dummy.

Probably easier to address them the same and turn down the volume of the horn and bell in the B unit. That way if you take them to another layout you won't have to reconsist them to the other command station. The B unit still should have a small F denoting front.

Wait a minute, wait a minute. I think these are both powered with sound. They are twice as much as the single units. $420  So they better be both powered units.

Randy, where did you get that info for $90 dummy from? I don't see anything on Walther site that talks about the AB setup?

Here is the link

I was lookign at the announcement of the release here: http://www.walthers.com/exec/page/press/2007/e7_diesels

DC units are both powered, DCC it says are one pwoered, one dummy.

This is $100 less than the ones you linked, so for the extra hundred they darn well BETTER have a decoder and motor in the second unit. The ones int h release, if you compare the price of a single DCC/sound A unit with a DCC/Sound AA or AB combo, it's $95 more for that dummy loco.

I think Walthers is setting some ridiculously high MSRP to make it look like you get a better discount - because if it's the NYC ones you want, MB Klein has the sound/DCC set for $270!

Michael,

Although the A and B units each carry their own road number, the units are both factory programmed with the short address of 3.  You will want to program each unit with its own unique long address, then program the two units together as a consist.

Walthers Proto uses QSI sounder decoders in its engines.
