i currently have a layout with maybe 35 ft of main line. the question is is it worth getting dcc or using mrc's tech 6 to get sound out of my 2 diesels?

No where near enough information to give any kind of recommendation on what you should do. Here are a few questions that would have an affect on the answer:

Are the two diesels you mentioned the only engines you have?
If you have other engines that are not DCC equipped do you have any interest in converting them?
When operating how many engines do you want to be able to run at a a time?
What kind of control do you prefer(stationary "power pack" style, tethered cab, or wired or wireless walkaround cab)?
Also, in addition to the current answers to these questions, any future changes to the answers should be considered
.

Both the Zephyr and the Power Cab mentioned above are excellent starter DCC systems, but depending on your particular needs either one might be a good or bad choice. Personally, I tend to steer people away from the Tech 6 because it is really a very limited DCC system with the added ability to switch to a DC power pack, but in some situations it still may be a good choice.

This weeks episode of the model railcast, show No. 118, had a discussion on DCC which I think might provide some perspective on the matter. You can find it on itunes

Or look at the NCE powercab set up for beginning DCC.

Look at a Digitrax Zepher.  You will get everything you need for DCC/Sound for about $150.
