Sounds like a decoder issue at this point. No reason that going to DCC should affect DCS. But if it runs fine in one it should do so with the other. Just make sure the DCC controller is TOTALLY removed from the system before running the DCS to see if that helps.

Have you posted this on the Classic Toy Trains forum, or asked MTH directly?
I very much doubt that painting the wheels had anything to do with this. If it works in DCC mode, then there is no problem with electrical connectivity between the track and the decoder.
Even though this is an HO engine, there aren't a lot of DCS users here. That's why I think you might have better luck on an O-gauge forum where DCS is more commonly used.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
It's hard to say if it's from the wheels because I haven't run the engine with dcs since about 6 months ago. But it seems like it could have been the problem so I cleaned the wheels and still nothing!
Did this engine work with both DCC and DCS before you painted the wheels? It's not clear from your post if the problem had something to do with the wheel painting, or if there was something wrong from the beginning.
Is there a battery maybe needing replacing either in the controller or inside the loco itself? I seem to recall reading about when MTH engines don't seem to respond that there is a battery to change out. I hope this helps and doesn't confound further....someone will come along to help.

I DID FACTORY RESET AND NOTHING......
Hmmm. Maybe it's like a baby bird. If it's infected by human touch the mama bird abandons it. Does DCS do the same? Probably not but kind of funny in a way. If MTH loco's have a reset command with DCS similar to what DCC has I would try it. Get it back to factory default and try again. By the way which loco are you running?
I have the MTH ho scale Daylight 4449. Today, I decided to paint the wheels black. I did so because I model modern engines and the daylights whitewall wheels were 1950's. Anyway, long story short, I took it out to my layout and it works fine with DCC but when I switch to DCS, the commander won't recognize it's there all my other mth engines work with dcs. So I cleaned the wheel bottoms and still nothing. Any suggestions? DCC works but DCS won't recognize it. Thanks for any help folks!
