Florida vacation cancelled for Zephyr
Posted by WheelSet2 on Friday, June 25, 2010 6:02 PM

Happy Weekend everyone.

Want to send out a big thanks to everyone that helped me with my Zephyr problem.  Randy, you were right.  I put a new decoder in a new loco and I was able to program this one.  (surprised the heck out of me).  So good news, my Zephyr is not going on vacation to Florida this year.  The decoder's fate however has not been determined yet.  Don't know if I should send it on vacation, take it back to the store and beg for it's mercy or give it a proper burial and move on to a shiney new blue decoder that doesn't have issues.

You can probably get it replaced under warranty. I forget, did it run as address 3 and not take any programming, or did it not run at all? If it ran on 3 just fine, it probably needs a reset, if it didn't run and wouldn;t program then the motor drive is probably shot. If the former, give the reset another shot. Try the program track, CV8=8, then take it off the rails. Or try selecting address 00 and then using ops mode to set CV8=8 (after making sure NOTHING else is on the track!!), and again remove power, then restore power. It shoudl still respond on 3 but try the program track again and see if it works now. If not, it's probbaly toast and it's time to exercise the warranty, or just put it aside.

I tried a new loco with a new decoder and it programed perfectly with new address.  I put the original loco with offending decoder and still would not program with anything other than address 03.  Still getting DNR on the programming track and busy signal with operations mode, but the new loco and new decoder can program on programming track and ops mode.  The decoder is probably 4 years old, so probably not under warranty any longer.  Probably just best to bury it and move on to newer ones.  But any excuse to go to the hobby shop is a good one, right?

p.s.  But no one was happier than my wife when I got the new decoder to program and woke her up at 11:00 p.m. to come look.  lol

Yeah, I am sure she was as pleased as all get out.  Probably told you, too, huh...Laugh

It is good that guys like Randy are here to help talk troubled DCC users through their 'issues'.   Also good that you are much better off than you had feared.

Also make sure the lock code isn't activated.  That would stop it from changing anything. Should be CV15 and 16 if the decoder supports it.
