which n scale decoder for these locos
Posted by ScottinSC on Friday, May 7, 2010 12:28 PM

I have a walthers p2k GP 38-2. This is a single board unit. I am trying to determine if anyone makes a plug in play decoder for this loco. I can't find anything on line and the walthers person I spoke to couldn't help. The onlinesource I usually get my decoders from pointed me to digitrax chat but Yahoo is slow to send me log in.

The second decoder I am seeking is for a Con Cor Sw1200. This loco has two boards and on visual inspection it looks like the TCS CN GP may work. Again my on line searches have turned up blank. Has anyone tried to install this decoder in this loco?

Thanks,

Scott

Go directly to the Digitrax site( digitrax.com ).There is a button to click on to find the decoder to fit your loco's. Your Walthers GP38-2 would need a DZ143 or DZ125.

There is not a plug-n-play decoder for the Walther's GP-38. The engine was supposedly designed to accept a drop in light board replacement decoder, but apparently the motor gets it's current from the frame, which precludes the use of a drop-in decoder. Here is an example hardwired install for one.

Thanks Robert. Wow Walthers made a real lemon with this loco. First it had be be returned for the famous cracked gear problem and now I learn it's not a plug in play. It may be awhile before Walther's sees my $$$.
